Getting Started with Rigid Signs

Designing a sign is similar to designing a banner except that the substrate – the material the sign will go on – is metal, wood, glass or plastic, as opposed to vinyl like we would use for a banner. If you are unsure of which sign material will work best for your project, please do not hesitate to give us a call at (303) 530-5292. We are happy to help you design the best sign for your needs.

Choosing the Sign Material
We offer both aluminum and plastic material for signs that weather well for outdoor use and look sharp and professional indoors. Let us know if your sign will be exposed to more extreme conditions such as corrosive gasses or temperature extremes.

Choosing the Sign Mount
Let us know whether your sign will be wall mounted with screws, magnets, velcro or adhesive tape, or whether it will be framed with wood, plastic or metal. We can fabricate signs to fit your existing frames or provide frames to your specifications.

Choosing the Sign and Lettering Size
Signs are about getting attention but they also must be readable. Choose a sign size large enough to accommodate the graphics and message you want to get across to your audience. Will your audience be driving while reading your message? If they are, make your message simpler and use larger lettering for the best impact and readability. Judge your sign’s design and layout at actual viewing distance. Often a design that seems too bold even overwhelming up close will look fine at a realistic viewing distance. Likewise, a design that seems balanced on a computer screen or on a draft printout may be too subtle to be effective from a distance.

Choosing Colors
Choose colors that provide good contrast against each other such as white letters on navy blue or black backgrounds, or black letters on white or yellow background. When placing lettering over a full-color graphic such as a photograph, make sure that the edges of the lettering are sharp enough to be distinguishable from the background or use a drop shadow to help make the lettering stand out.
